Sacred geometry refers to mathematical proportions, shapes and patterns found in nature that have been adopted by religious, spiritual, and/or philosophical belief systems. In sacred geometry tattoos, symbolic and sacred meanings are ascribed to certain geometric shapes and certain geometric proportions.
Sacred Geometry is a way of thinking that gives spiritual significance to geometric shapes. Is the geometry used in the design and construction of religious structures as well as for sacred spaces, the creation of religious art, and tattoos. Sacred geometry can be found in religious artwork from many different cultures, and often uses tilings of regular polygons, the Platonic solids, and interlocking circles arranged in symmetric patterns.
For many, these naturally-occurring structures serve to reinforce their faith in a higher power or divine architect. For thousands of years, worshippers all over the world have built sacred patterns into temples, mosques, churches, synagogues, sacred spaces (temenoi, sacred groves, village greens and holy wells), pyramids, altars, relics and religious artwork.
Common sacred geometry themes include but are not limited to: the flower of life, seed of life, mandalas, yantras, platonic solids, fractals, Fibonacci spirals, pentagonal and hexagonal structures, and anything incorporating the ratios of Pi or Phi (also called โThe Divine Proportionโ or โGolden Ratioโ).
These patterns can be found in a wide range of aesthetic formats, and may or may not have any specific meaning ascribed to them. In tattooing, each design's significance (if any) will be entirely up to the artist and client.
